Clash of Clans Air Defense Guide: Strategy, Upgrade & Levels
You won’t see the Air Defense in Clash of Clans until you reach Town Hall level four; it’s an incredibly powerful defensive building with a very high damage per second that can help defend your village against your enemy’s flying units. Continue reading this short article if you’d like to learn various strategies that can help you take your defense game to the next level.
The Basics: Stats, Upgrade Time and Town Hall Attack Strategy
The Air Defense will take out single targets at a rate of one attack per second. It’s able to shoot at a range of ten tiles and targets only air attacks from your enemy. The building itself will take up a 3×3 space on your grid, so you’ll want to keep that in mind and place them carefully when you’re planning out your map, but we’ll talk more about that later.

The Air Defense is a lot more important than it sounds like it is – It’s an absolute necessity when it comes to dealing with high health air units such as the Dragon and Healer. It has the highest damage per second of any tower on your map (aside from a charged up Inferno Tower, of course), which makes it one of the most important defensive structures in the entire game.
You won’t see the Air Defense until you reach Town Hall level four, here’s a list of the number of Air Defenses you’ll have made available to you in correspondence with the Town Hall levels:
– Town Hall 1: 0
– Town Hall 2: 0
– Town Hall 3: 0
– Town Hall 4: 1
– Town Hall 5: 1
– Town Hall 6: 1
– Town Hall 7: 2
– Town Hall 8: 3
– Town Hall 9: 4
– Town Hall 10: 4
As you can see, there aren’t as many Air Defenses available to you as there are some of the other defenses, but they’re so powerful that you won’t need as many.

Place Them Wisely
The Air Defense is the only low-level tower in the entire game that gives out significant damage from the get go. Of course upgrading the tower makes it even more powerful and allows it to throw out even more damage, even a level one tower is capable of taking out your enemy swiftly.
If you place your Air Defense towers carelessly or without knowing exactly how they work, you’re basically just asking for them to get taken over quickly by your opponent. Once your Air Defense tower is out of commission, your entire base is left vulnerable to a wide number of attacks from your enemy. It comes in particularly handy when it comes to dealing with Healers and Dragons, and if your towers have been rendered useless you won’t have any defense against them.

You should place your Air Defense towers towards the center of your base. They should never be placed near the parameter because that puts them in a position to be easily taken out by your opponent.
As you progress through the game and begin to gain more towers, place your towers in a triangle or square shaped pattern in the middle of your map to ensure that there are a ton of high health targets in between them. This will make it harder for a mass Dragon army to get to; they’ll get caught up attacking the other targets instead.
You never want to place two Air Defense towers side by side. If two towers are placed side by side and you’re attacked by a series of Lightning Spells, you’re going to end up losing two towers instead of one. Placing walls between towers that are near each other will help up your defense.
Putting Cannons and Archer towers around your Air Defense towers can help give you better ground defense as well. Think of your Air Defense towers as the big brother that comes in to handle things when Archer towers just won’t cut it.
Upgrades Are A Top Priority
You want to upgrade your Air Defense early on because it has an exceptionally lengthy training time. You should also take care to only upgrade one of them at a time unless you happen to have a protective shield up, otherwise you’ll be leaving your entire camp vulnerable during an attack.
Since it takes so long for the upgrade on the Air Defense towers to complete and you’re only able to do one at a time (at least if you want to survive an attack), it should definitely be one of the first buildings you upgrade when you start a new Town Hall level.
How To Attack Them
On the other hand, if you’re the one that’s going to be doing the attacking you’re going to want to send in some Minions and Dragons to help you take them down. Healers are super vulnerable to air attacks – more so than any of your other troops – so you’re going to need to first send in some Giants to destroy the building before you even consider sending her in.
Balloons aren’t exactly a great offense either, Air Defense towers are able to take them out with just a couple of shots from a good distance away. However, if you send in a couple of dragons to keep the Air Defense tower occupied, you can get away with sending in a fleet of balloons to destroy a good deal of your opponent’s land defenses.
Since the Air Defense tower is only able to target one air unit at a time, it’s super easy to overwhelm it. All you need to do is send in a large flock of Minions and you’re pretty much guaranteed to get past it with no problem.
